Streak counters can turn a habit into a willpower test

Early note

Early guess. This note is early and still needs a worked example.

A streak counter feels motivating right up until the day it breaks. Then the thought becomes “I already blew it, so why bother,” and a small slip turns into giving up entirely.

What I’d try instead

Without the scoreboard, I just do the thing or I don’t, and each day stands alone. I wonder whether it works better to ask what I’m doing this week that supports the habit than to count how many days in a row I’ve managed.

What I haven’t tested

I want to try this on one habit before I trust it. It’s also possible that for some people, or some habits, a streak is exactly the push that works. I don’t have evidence either way yet.
